If you weren’t able to make the Precious Metals Testing – with Portable XRF webinar last week – you missed an informative 45 minutes where Precious Metals expert, Dr. Jonathan Margalit, and Vice President of American Jewelry & Loan, Seth Gold, discussed the various methods of testing precious metals, including the scratch acid test, fire assay, gold testers, and portable x-ray fluorescence.
But don’t worry. We recorded the webinar for you to view at your convenience. In addition to technology discussions, a live demonstration of both the XRF instrument and a return-on-investment calculator were also given. At the end, both Jonathan and Seth answered questions from attendees (jewelry retailers and pawnbrokers).
Make special note of Seth’s comments about the hazards of using the acid test, including inaccuracy and liability. Here’s another comment he made regarding the value of XRF technology:
“Prior to getting a Portable XRF analyzer, we used to use the scratch test and it is a very subjective test. If something looked 10K, we would pay the customer 10K. However, now with the XRF technology, my employees can be more exact and pay for the exact gold content, rather than what the class says. We use it for quality control and for employee auditing to make sure they are paying the right amount, and it’s proven to be very beneficial to us at our store.”
