Changes in the legal framework for kidney sharing in the United Kingdom (UK) have expanded the pool of eligible donors, particularly non-altruistic donors. The current allocation scheme includes both short and long altruistic donor chains, and patients can register for transplantation despite blood group or HLA incompatibility. The UK has the largest number of kidney recipients in the European Union due to advances in kidney allocation since 2006, which have expanded access to kidney transplants for minorities and older patients.
