Description

PIPES has pKa near the physiological pH which makes it useful in cell culture work. PIPES was used in the preparation of a variety of marine and mammalian tissues for electron microscopic study. Lipid loss and artifacts are minimized when PIPES was used to buffer the glutaraldehyde fixative. Fixation of fungal zoospores for fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy was optimal with a combination of glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde in PIPES buffer. Alkaline phosphatase retention activity was 60% greater.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

Applications
PIPES has pKa near the physiological pH which makes it useful in cell culture work. PIPES was used in the preparation of a variety of marine and mammalian tissues for electron microscopic study. Lipid loss and artifacts are minimized when PIPES was used to buffer the glutaraldehyde fixative. Fixation of fungal zoospores for fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy was optimal with a combination of glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde in PIPES buffer. Solubility
Fully misicible in water. Soluble in water (0.05 M), giving a clear, colorless solution (the resulting solution has a pH of approximately 4.5-4.7). 10 g will dissolve in 40 mL of 0.1 N NaOH.

Notes
Store in cool place. Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Store away from strong oxidizing agents, bases, reducing agents, heat.
