Description

An aminocyclitol antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria and interrupts protein synthesis Spectinomycin dihydrochloride pentahydrate is used as an aminocyclitol antibiotic derived from streptomyces spectabilis. It is used in cell culture applications as well as involved in the treatment of gonorrhea. Further, it is used as an anti-bacterial agent to prevent contamination and as a selection agent for resistant bacteria and plant cells.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

General Description

  • Spectinomycin dihydrochloride pentahydrate is derived from Streptomyces spectabilis and presents antibacterial and antimicrobial activities
  • Spectinomycin hydrochloride is a compound that inhibits the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria and interrupts protein synthesis and peptide elongation, leading to bacterial cell death

Application

  • Spectinomycin dihydrochloride pentahydrate is a compound that is active against gram-negative bacteria
  • In the laboratory, this compound is used in cell culture applications
  • It prevents contamination and can be used to select for resistant bacteria and plant cells containing the marker gene Spcr
  • It has been used to study respiratory tract infections caused by Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica
  • In genetic approaches, this compound can be used to amplify the plasmid copy number
