Mycobiotic Agar (Mycocel Agar) with Chloramphenicol and Cycloheximide

Catalog number: R01630

Isolate and cultivate pathogenic fungi, especially from clinical specimens which may be contaminated with bacteria and saprophytic fungi with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Mycobiotic Agar (Mycocel Agar) with Chloramphenicol and Cycloheximide. Leach, Ford and Whiffen described the use of cycloheximide as a selective agent for the inhibition of saprophytic fungi1. Researchers later found that the addition of both cycloheximide and chloramphenicol achieved more complete selectivity against growth of saprophytic fungi and bacteria2.

The Mycobiotic Agar (Mycocel Agar) with Chloramphenicol and Cycloheximide is recommended for recovery of dimorphic fungi and dermatophytes potentially contaminated with bacteria and saprophytic fungi3,4.

  • Selective: chloramphenicol and cycloheximide in the medium act as selective agents. Cycloheximide inhibits rapidly growing saprophytic fungi that may overgrow slower growing pathogens. Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which inhibits Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as Nacardia.
  • Ready prepared: convenience of prepared media.
