General Description
- Ethylmercurithiosalicylic acid is an oxidizing reagent that inhibits sulfhydryl-containing active sites of several enzymes
- It is also known as thimerosal or 2-(ethylmercuriomercapto)benzoic acid sodium salt.
- It can bind to sulfhydryl compounds, such as glutathione, cysteine, and sulfhydryl groups of proteins
- Additionally, it can activate inositol triphosphate calcium channels on membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum, resulting in the regulation of cellular functions
Applications
- Ethylmercurithiosalicylic acid has been widely investigated as a preservative in medicinal laboratory research, including vaccine studies
- It has been shown to exhibit antifungal and antiseptic properties
