General Information

• Puromycin dihydrochloride hydrate is the hydrochloride salt form of puromycin and is an aminoglycoside with antibiotic activity isolated from the Streptomyces alboniger
• Puromycin dihydrochloride hydrate is a protein synthesis inhibitor that causes premature chain termination by acting as an analog of the 3’-terminal ends of aminoacyl-tRNA, inhibiting protein synthesis

Applications

• This compound shows anti-microbial, anti-protozoal, anti-trypanosomal, and anti-neoplastic activities and is also used as an antibiotic in cell culture
• It also reveals anti-tumor activity in studies on brain cancer cells
• This compound has been used to study transcriptional regulatory mechanisms that control the sequential and coordinate expression of genes during cell differentiation
• It is active against gram-positive microorganisms, less active against acid-fast bacilli and gram-negative microorganisms. Puromycin can prevent growth of bacteria, protozoa, algae, and mammalian cells in in vitro studies.
