Swordfish is an enormous mackerel-like fish representing the only member of the family Xiphidae. It feeds on schools of fishes. The prolongation of the forepart of the skull into a horizontally flattened "sword" is a formidable weapon which can pierce wooden boats. An Atlantic and Mediterranean fish, it is seen only occasionally in the Pacific. A patient with clinical sensitivity to swordfish had IgE antibodies to a 25 kD protein but to no other protein from 10 fish species tested. The allergen may be specific for the family Xiphidae (1).
