COBOS Coal Blend Optimization System

Catalog number: COBOS
The Thermo Scientific™ COBOS Coal Blend Optimization System is powerful, intuitive software for blending coal sources to meet a defined quality specification at minimum cost, within the constraints of operational priorities. Allowing operators to make any number of predefined ‘recipes’, it optimizes the manual or automatic control of coal sorting and blending equipment, even in the face of changing source quality. With COBOS any available coal source can be defined in terms of composition and value; target recipes are specified in terms of quality parameters such as ash, sulfur, moisture, ash oxide or ratioed ash oxide content. Up to six sources are chosen to make an individual, selected blend. Use COBOS to minimize the variability of coal blends, consistently satisfy customer specifications and simultaneously improve the bottom line by using fewer high cost/scarce coal supplies.

COBOS combines with online coal analyzers such as the Thermo Scientific CQM Flex coal analyzer and Thermo Scientific ECA-3 elemental crossbelt analyzer to maximize the value of real-time measurements and the efficiency of coal processing operations. Key features include:

  • Automated graphics interface plots all key control parameters for a current recipe on a single page, for efficient data access and operation.
  • Automated weight averaging of MAF (moist, mineral matter-free basis) calorific value, bound moisture, and other ash constituents, for accurate, informative monitoring with minimal operator input.
  • Option to specify critical feeder information, including the delay time from each feeder to the analyzer, for precise blend optimization.
  • Automated real-time error compensation, for quality assumptions and reported weights from each source, for more accurate blending control.
  • Options for either manual or automated operation, for easy integration with established operational practice.
