There are approximately 70,000 recognized species of fungi. Of these some 300 are known to be human pathogens. Pathogenic fungi are capable of causing superficial, cutaneous, subcutaneous, or systemic infections. Candida albicans is a causative agent of candidiasis, the most common opportunistic fungal infection.
