Metallic dysprosium ([Xe]4f106s2) (CAS 7429-91-6) is bright silver in color and when combined tends to form greenish-yellow salts. Dysprosium is relatively stable in air at room temperature, yet tarnishes in moist air. The metal can be cut with a knife or machined without sparking (if care is taken to avoid overheating). Even small amounts of impurities can greatly affect dysprosium's properties.
