IL-2 is a 15 kDa cytokine which is produced by immature CD4 Th precursor and Th0 cells as well as some Th1 cells of the immune system. IL-2 plays an important role as a growth factor, differentiation factor, and regulator of cell death. IL-2 stimulates the proliferation of B cells, augments natural killer cell activity, and inhibits granulocyte macrophage colony formation. The gene for IL-2 is located on chromosome number 14 at the 4q26-q27 locus.
