Interleukin 9 (IL9) is a cytokine that regulates a variety of hematopoietic cells. It is secreted by T-cells, and supports IL-2 independent, and IL-4 independent growth of helper T-cells. It is also a positive regulator of cell proliferation, and prevents apoptosis. It functions through the interleukin 9 receptor (IL9R), which activates signal transducer and activator (STAT) proteins and results in IRS1 and IRS2/PI3K and MEK/ERK signaling cascades.
