It is used as a developing agent in black and white developers, as a metal- complexing agent and is involved in oxygen absorption in gas analysis. It exhibits antiseptic properties. Its alkaline solution is used to absorb oxygen from air, thereby it plays a vital role to calculate the amount of oxygen in air.
