Tri-n-butyl citrate is used in polishes, inks, nitrocellulose lacquers, as an anti-foam agent and as a plasticizer. It is also used as paint additives, coating additives and processing aids. In addition to this, it is added to the zein film to enhance its mechanical properties for industrial processing.
