Taurine plays an important role in cardiovascular function, skeletal muscle function, the retina and the central nervous system. It acts as an antioxidant as well as protecting against the toxicity of various substances such as lead and cadmium. It is also used in contact lens solution and an ingredient in numerous energy drinks.
