Isolate, enumerate and presumptively identify Listeria species and L. monocytogenes from food and environmental samples with the Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Brilliance™ Listeria Agar (ISO) (Dehydrated culture medium and supplements) following broth enrichment. The medium identifies Listeria species based on their utilization of X-glucoside giving rise to blue-green colonies. Listeria monocytogenes are further differentiated by their ability to highly produce lecithinase, producing an opaque, white halo around the colony.

Isolate, enumerate and presumptively identify Listeria species and L. monocytogenes with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Brilliance™ Listeria Agar (ISO)

  • Prepare Oxoid Brilliance Listeria Agar (ISO) by adding Thermo Scientific™ Brilliance Listeria Agar (ISO) Selective Supplement (SR0257) and Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Brilliance Listeria Agar (ISO) Selective Supplement (SR0258) to Oxoid Brilliance Listeria (ISO) Agar.
  • Use as part of the Thermo Scientific™ Listeria Precis™ Detection and Enumeration method, or as part of the ISO 11290-1:2017 and ISO 11290-2:2017 reference methods for the detection and enumeration of Listeria species and L. monocytogenes.
  • Demonstrated to produce clearly differentiated colonies of Listeria within 22 hours when following the protocols for the Listeria Precis Methods or ISO 11290-1 and ISO 11290-2 methods.

Oxoid Brilliance Listeria Agar uses the chromogen X-glucoside for presumptive identification of Listeria spp. This chromogen is cleaved by ß-glucosidase which is common to all Listeria species. Other organisms that possess this enzyme, such as enterococci, are inhibited by the selective agents within the medium; lithium chloride, polymyxin B and nalidixic acid, whilst amphotericin inhibits the growth of any yeasts and molds present in the sample. Listeria monocytogenes and pathogenic Listeria ivanovii are then further differentiated by their ability to produce the phospholipase enzyme, lecithinase. This enzyme hydrolyses the lecithin in the medium, producing an opaque white halo around the colony.

The formulation and performance of Oxoid Brilliance Listeria Agar (ISO) conforms with ISO 11290-1:2017 and ISO 11290-2:2017 reference methods for the detection and enumeration of Listeria species and L. monocytogenes.

Oxoid Brilliance Listeria Agar (ISO) has been validated as part of the Thermo Scientific™ Listeria Precis™ Methods for a broad range of samples according to ISO 16140-2 following NF validation rules when compared to the ISO 11290-1:2017 and ISO 11290 -2:2017.
