Puromycin is also used as a substrate of Mdr-1. It is been widely used in cell culture applications. It also induces apoptosis which was found as parallel apoptosis caused by deprivation of neuronal growth factor (NGF) in developing chick sympathetic neurons; however, this apoptotic activity can be inhibited by several transcriptional inhibitors such as: actinomycin D and α-amanitin (sc-202440) which has lead researchers to hypothesize that apoptosis is triggered through the transcription of particular genes. Shown to arrest cells in G2/M phase. Puromycin is an inhibitor of CD13 and DPP7.

General Description

  • Puromycin (puromycine) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic originating from Streptomyces alboniger
  • It acts as an aminoacyl tRNA analog and prematurely terminates peptide elongation
  • Puromycin has effects on both prokaryotes and eukaryotes
  • Puromycin may also have neoplastic activity

Application

  • Puromycin can be used for research use as an immunofluorescent target, in antibiotic resistance testing, or for studies on drug mechanisms
