Differentiate microorganisms based on coagulation and proteolysis of casein with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ 2X Skim Milk Medium. Skim milk is used as a substrate in media to identify psychrotropic bacteria which are commonly associated with milk products1. Such bacteria produce proteolytic enzymes that often remain active after treatment with ultra-high temperature sterilization2. Skim milk is also included in clinical laboratories to cultivate and identify organisms such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Cornybacterium diphtheriae, Clostridium butyricum3.

2X Skim Milk Medium is recommended as a complete medium by itself or as an additive in more complex microbiological media.

Skim milk is a substrate that certain species of bacteria react with in different ways to produce a variety of metabolic by-products. Indicators such as litmus, brom cresol purple, chlorophenol red, methylene blue, or resazurin may be added to detect pH changes or oxidation reduction reactions induced by bacteria.

  • Ready-to-use – Convenience of prepared media.
  • Available as 22mL (REF R09776) and 5mL (REF R064548) tubes.

2X Skim Milk Medium contains skim milk and demineralized water. Skim milk serves as the substrate for certain species of bacteria that react in different ways to produce variety of metabolic by-products.
