Identify microorganisms based on the ability to liquefy gelatin with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Thioglycollate Gelatin Medium. First described by Brewer for the cultivation of aerobic organisms and obligate anaerobes1,2, Brewer's formulation was modified by replacement of meat infusion with peptones to enhance growth.3,4. Gelatin is added to Thioglycollate Gelatin Medium for detection of gelatin liquefaction by anaerobes, microaerophiles and aerobic microorganisms. Most microorganisms grow luxuriantly in this medium regardless of their oxygen requirements.
Thioglycollate Gelatin Medium is suitable for cultivation of both aerobic and anaerobic organisms.
Sodium thioglycollate acts as a reducing agent which maintains low oxygen tension in the medium. A small amount of agar provides for anaerobic conditions in the depths of the tubes by convection current restriction. Gelatin serves as the substrate that allows for detection of gelatinase produced by certain organisms.
Thioglycollate Gelatin Medium contains peptones and cysteine that supply nitrogen, carbon and trace elements necessary for bacterial growth. Dextrose provides a ready source of energy. Sodium thioglycolate acts as a reducing agent. Sodium chloride serves as the source of essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium.
