Identify aerobic actinomycetes using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Starch Agar. In 1917, the American Public Health Association (APHA) published the formula for Nutrient Agar1. Potato starch was later added as a substrate to test for degradation or hydrolysis of starch by aerobic actinomycetes such as Streptomyces spp2,3. Starch agar is specified in current compendia of methods for microbiological examination of water and foods and is useful for maintenance of stock cultures4,5.

Starch Agar is a solid medium recommended for use in qualitative procedures to identify aerobic actinomycetes.

Beef extract combined with gelatin peptone provides a source of nutrients for the growth of aerobic actinomycetes. Starch acts as the substrate that is hydrolyzed or degraded by amylase produced by the microorganisms. Test for hydrolysis of starch is performed by flooding the surface of the agar with Gram Iodine (REF R40056).

  • Easy to interpret – A clear and colorless zone around the colonies indicates a positive test. Blue color around the colonies and no clear colorless zone indicates a negative test.

Starch Agar contains potato starch, gelatin peptone, beef extract, agar and demineralized water. Beef extract supplies carbohydrates, vitamins, nitrogenous compounds and salts. Gelatin peptone provides nutrients in the form of amino acids and peptides. Starch serves as the substrate which an organism may hydrolyze or degrade with amylase production.
