Isolate and cultivate pathogenic yeast and molds from clinical specimens with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (Emmons) w/Chloramphenicol. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (Emmons) is a modification of the original medium developed by Sabouraud in 18921. Emmons neutralized the pH, increasing it to 7.0, and reduced the concentration of dextrose from 40 to 20 g/l2. Chloramphenicol is added to the medium to make it inhibitory to bacterial overgrowth while allowing isolation of pathogenic fungi3.

Isolate and cultivate pathogenic yeast and molds from clinical specimens with Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (Emmons) w/Chloramphenicol.

  • Ready-to-use – Convenience of a prepared media.
  • Suitable for isolation of pathogenic fungi from a material containing a large number of other fungi or bacteria.
  • Selective – Chloramphenicol, which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, inhibits the growth of a range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

This medium contains casein, meat peptones, nitrogenous compounds and amino acids necessary for the growth of fungi. Dextrose is an energy source which serves to support the growth of fungi. Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which inhibit a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Yeast extract may be added to the medium as a growth supplement to ensure the growth of fastidious fungi.
