Rapidly differentiate microorganisms on the basis of urease production with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Rapid Urea Broth (Lyophilized). In 1941 Rustigian and Stuart developed a medium for detection of urease activity by Proteus spp.1 They further observed that other urea-positive genera within Enterobacteriaceae could be detected in a medium with reduced buffering capacity2. Rapid Urea Broth provides such a medium and allows rapid urease detection in enteric gram-negative bacilli other than Proteus spp. This medium is recommended by the American Public Health Association3.
The detection of urease activity is routinely used in clinical microbiology to aid in identification of gram-negative bacteria. Rapid Urea Broth (Lyophilized) is a medium recommended for use in rapid differentiation of microorganisms on the basis of urease production. Microorganisms that hydrolyze urea by means of urease enzyme produce ammonia. This alkaline end product causes the pH indicator, phenol red, to change color from yellow-orange to pink-red.
A balance of monopotassium phosphate and disodium phosphate comprise the buffering system to produce a rapid change in pH that changes phenol red indicator accordingly.
