Cultivate a wide variety of microorganisms including pathogenic fungi using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Agar (Dehydrated). BHI Agar is recommended by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) and the American Public Health Association (APHA)1,2. BHI Agar is a nutritious base medium, which is suitable for the cultivation of a wide variety of microorganisms including bacteria, yeasts, and molds3. BHI Agar after addition of 5-10% Sheep blood can be used for the isolation of dimorphic fungi which may grow poorly on non-enriched media.

This medium contains casein and meat peptones which provide nitrogen, amino acids, and peptides necessary for the bacterial growth. Brain heart infusion also supplies peptones and dextrose which are rich in nitrogen, carbon, sulfur, and vitamins. Sheep blood provides essential growth factors for isolation of fastidious fungi. Yeast extract may be incorporated in the medium to serve as a growth stimulant. Cycloheximide also inhibits the growth of some pathogens such as Cryptococcus neoformans, some Candida spp., some Aspergillus spp., and zygomycetes.

  • Selective solid media - Selective agents such as gentamicin, chloramphenicol, penicillin, and streptomycin when added inhibit a range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
  • Recommended by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) and the American Public Health Association (APHA).
