Effectively carry out microbiological testing of cosmetics using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Letheen Agar Modified (Dehydrated). Weber and Black recommended the use of lecithin and polysorbate 80 to neutralize the antimicrobial action of quaternary ammonium compounds1,2. Letheen Agar Modified is based on the formula in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual for use in the microbiological testing of cosmetics3. It is recommended by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) for cultivation of microorganisms from cosmetic sampling4.

This medium contains casein peptone and beef extract which supply nutrients necessary for the growth of bacteria. Letheen agar modified contains additional casein peptone which supplies nitrogen for enhanced growth of microorganisms. Yeast extract provides B-complex vitamins. Sodium bisulfite neutralizes quaternary ammonium compounds. Lecithin and polysorbate 80 partially inactivate quaternary ammonium compounds, phenolic compounds, formalin, hexachlorophene and ethanol. Dextrose is a carbon source.
