Effectively carry out microbiological testing of cosmetics using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Letheen Broth Modified (Dehydrated). Weber and Black modified Tryptose Glucose Extract Broth by incorporating lecithin and polysorbate 80 as a result of their study on quaternary ammonium compounds1,2. Letheen Broth Modified is based on the formula in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual for use in the microbiological testing of cosmetics3. It is recommended by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) for cultivation of microorganisms from cosmetic samples4.

This medium contains meat peptone and beef extract which supply nutrition necessary for the growth of bacteria. Letheen broth modified contains additional casein peptone which supplies nitrogen for enhanced growth of microorganisms. Yeast extract provides B-complex vitamins. Sodium bisulfite neutralizes quaternary ammonium compounds, lecithin and polysorbate 80 partially inactivate quaternary ammonium compounds, phenolic compounds, formalin, hexachlorophene and ethanol.
