Isolate and cultivate Mycoplasma species with Mycoplasma Broth Base (Dehydrated).
Isolate and cultivate Mycoplasma species with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Mycoplasma Broth Base (Dehydrated).
Mycoplasma Broth Base is formulated as a basal medium to be enriched with any satisfactory supplementary factors used for the growth of mycoplasmas. The existence of mycoplasmas was first recognized in 1898 as organisms responsible for bovine pleuropneumonia. Hayflick and Chanock later connected these organisms to human disease and described a medium that contained yeast extract and horse serum for cultivation1. Mycoplasma Broth Base is prepared as per formulation of Morton et al.2.
Mycoplasma, formerly known as pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) are a group of filterable, fastidious organisms which lack a rigid cell well. This characteristic makes them naturally resistant to many common β-lactam antibiotics such as penicillin that target cell wall synthesis. They can be parasitic or saprotrophic. They are mainly parasites on the surface of human and animal epithelium cells. The majority of mycoplasma require media enriched with serum for good growth. Antibacterial agents are also necessary to prevent growth of contaminating organisms.
Use Mycoplasma Broth Base for cultivation of Mycoplasma species.
Mycoplasma Broth Base contains beef heart infusion, beef extract, and casein peptone that supply nutrients required for growth of mycoplasmas. Yeast extract supplies B-complex vitamins and enhances growth of organisms. Sodium chloride provides electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium.
