Determine dextrose fermentation by a variety of microorganisms with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Phenol Red Dextrose Broth (Dehydrated). Vera recommended using casein peptone in fermentation test media because of its high growth-promoting qualities1. It was reported that peptone could be used with phenol red as the pH indicator in fermentation tests.

Phenol Red Dextrose Broth is a complete medium prepared with phenol red as an indicator which changes the medium to yellow color when acid is produced. Phenol Red Broth without carbohydrate is used as a negative control for fermentation studies.  

  • Can be used in fermentation studies of pure cultures of many species of bacteria due to high growth promoting qualities of casein peptone.
  • Recommended by Association of Official Analytical Collaboration (AOAC) International and the American Public Health Association (APHA)2-4.
  • Easy to interpret because of dextrose fermentation reaction and gas production. The medium is yellow when there is acid production and there is no color change when there is no fermentation. Bubbles are present in the Durham tube when gas is produced.

Phenol Red Dextrose Broth contains casein peptone that has high growth-promoting qualities. Phenol red is the indicator which helps to determine the reaction by color change.

This medium also contains sodium chloride and dextrose. Sodium chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium of the medium. Dextrose is the source of fermentable carbohydrate.
