haloacetic acid analysis using ic-ms

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are disinfection byproducts (DBPs) generated during the water chlorination process and have been found to increase the risk of cancer. The analysis of HAAs is a complex and lengthy process with established methods by GC-MS or IC-MS typically taking one hour.

In this webinar recording we share a new HAA application using innovations in ion chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The presentation details the flexibility and time-savings of an optimized IC-MS setup together with its ability to offer sensitive, robust andreproducible results.

With the number of environmentally relevant per and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) compounds and precursors that cannot yet be analyzed continue to increase, there is a need to develop suitable analytical methods for their detection. Many PFAS are not accounted for by existing analytical methods. There is a need for a single analytical workflow that would allow for a direct determination of as many PFAS as possible.

Automated combustion ion chromatography (CIC), can be used to determine organic halogen contaminants, such as AOX (X = F, Cl, and Br). The AOF approach enables the determination of PFAS in surface water, groundwater, and wastewater. While LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS methods use a specified set of PFAS for their evaluation, the adsorption process for the AOF method ensures the extraction and determination of more components – PFAS and other fluorinated compounds – than the previously mentioned approaches.

She gained her Associates Degree in Winemaking from Chemeketa Community College in 2005.
