Webinar: Reducing ion beam damage with PFIB milling

On-demand webinar

Damage and implantation are key concerns when preparing TEM samples when using ion beams. To reduce this damage, Dr. Stuart Robertson at the Loughborough Materials Characterization Centre (LMCC) within Loughborough University uses plasma-focused ion beam milling on the Thermo Scientific Helios G4 PFIB to support a wide range of characterization and sample preparation projects.

The LMCC develops specialist facilities that enable high-quality materials characterization and supports researchers from all parts of the university. It also actively engages with industry by providing specialist services through a bespoke consultancy service.

In this webinar, Dr. Robertson shares three examples of how the PFIB has enhanced research at Loughborough University.

Watch on-demand to learn about:

  • Common ion damage and surface modifications caused by ion beams
  • Mitigating phase changes in 316 stainless steel using XeF-enhanced milling
  • In-situ thermal ageing of solder
  • PFIB cathodoluminescence for photovoltaic research

About the speakers

Dr. Stuart Robertson, Senior Research Associate, Loughborough Materials, Characterisation Centre, Loughborough University

Stuart earned a MEng in materials and design and a PhD at Loughborough University. During his undergraduate studies, he gained industrial experience in the composites and off highway hydraulics sectors. His PhD concerned the validation of a focused ion beam prepared micro bend test technique in SiC. Following this he worked on the characterization of ZrN before and after gold ion implantation using micro mechanical testing in the FIB as well as analysis using TEM, SEM, and HREBSD.

Following his PhD, he worked as a research associate based in both the electrical interconnects research group in the Wolfson School of Engineering and the Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre (LMCC). In his current role, he manages external research and consultancy within the Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre (LMCC).

Dr. Min Wu, Sr. Product Specialist, PFIB, Materials Science, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Dr. Min Wu is trained materials scientist and microscopist. She earned a doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2015. She joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2016 as application scientist and product specialist for SEM and Thermo Scientific DualBeam Technology with a special interest in plasma FIB.
