Cement raw materials are crushed and stocked into a special pile for blending to reduce the variability. The material is then transported to the raw mix proportioning area. We offer instruments and software to help ensure an optimal raw material mix. Thermo Scientific Acculink software creates a real time communication channel between lab XRF analyzers and the CB Omni Fusion Online Elemental Analyzer. By comparing the results from both these instruments, the software can monitor whether the online analyzer is performing within acceptable limits of accuracy and apply a correction to the online analyzer if needed, thus keeping the entire system working at the best possible performance levels.

Cement raw materials require careful monitoring and control to ensure process efficiency, optimal kiln operation and clinker quality. Variations in raw material quality, and improperly blended materials, adversely affect the process from pre-heater through the kiln and all the way to grinding.
The more variability in the raw material kiln feed, the more fuel is needed at the kiln to allow appropriate reaction of the raw materials into the correct clinker phases. What is more, the potential to “over react” raw materials and create harder to grind clinker is much higher with the higher fuel burn. If raw material chemistry is unknown or in question both fuel, energy and raw materials can be wasted and quality targets may be missed.
Cross-belt online analyzers that use Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) or Pulsed Fast Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) can be integrated into the conveyor belt line to analyze, in real time, the entire material stream. These technologies are deeply penetrative and measure the entire material volume travelling by conveyor at a high frequency of analysis, making them ideal instruments to help control stockpile chemistry and continuously proportion raw mix to ensure smooth kiln operation.
