  • It is required that someone be available during the installation in case there are questions or additional resources are needed.
  • Start-up typical takes  2-4 hours depending on the system and site readiness.
  • The Unity Lab Service engineer will provide orientation on the operation and maintenance of the water system.

Unpacking

  • The operation manual is included in the packaging. Contact technical support if a PDF version is required.

  • Some systems (Epure/Bpure) have an installation manual in the packaging and a full Installation/Operation manual on a CD also included in the packaging.
  • Manuals are also available on the Unity Lab Services website ›
  • The system must be unpacked to verify the serial number of the system to process the installation request.
  • Unpacking and inspecting the water system and accessories for shipping damage or missing components allows our team to take action to resolve the problem quickly.
  • It verifies all items were received and avoids delays searching for the items.
  • Call Customer Support at 866-984-3766, Option 1 as soon as possible. Please have your PO number, system model and serial number available.
  • If there is shipping damage and the box is damaged, please take a photo of the box as well as any damage.
  • The operation manual often lists what you will find while unpacking the system. Keep all the components together until Unity Lab Services representative arrives.
  • GenPure, MicroPure, Smart2Pure, Aquanex, Pacific and LabTower units have an assembly kit included. You will find separate packages inside the shipping carton along with the water system. The "extent of delivery" section of the operation manual will include a list of the items that is included in the assembly kit.
  • Accessories are often an important part of the function of the water system, therefore, it is best to wait until all components have arrived before having the water system installed. Additional fees will be charged for additional trips.

Water and Drain Requirements

  • NPT = National Pipe Thread = U.S. standard for pipe threads for plumbing fittings.
  • NPTF = National Pipe Thread Female
  • NPTM = National Pipe Thread Male

To determine actual size of pipe fittings, first determine if you have a male or female fitting:

  • Male fittings have threads on the outside, like a bolt or screw
  • Female fittings have threads on the inside, like a nut.

To measure male threads:

  • Measure the Outside Diameter (OD) of your pipe or pipe fitting by wrapping a string around the pipe
  • Mark the point where the string touches itself
  • Measure the length of the string from the tip to your mark
  • Divide by 3.14159
  • Use the chart below to find nominal pipe fitting size

For female threads:

  • Measure the inside diameter (ID) of your pipe or pipe fitting (using a ruler)
  • Use the chart below to find nominal pipe fitting size

Outside or Inside DiameterDecimal EquivalentNominal Diameter
13/32"0.405"1/8"
35/64"0.540"1/4"
43/64"0.675"3/8"
27/32"0.840"1/2"
1-3/16"1.050"3/4"
1-5/16"1.3151"
  • The customer must provide the correct feed water fitting to connect to the Barnstead Water system.
  • GenPure, MicroPure, Smart2Pure, LabTower, Barnstead pretreatment and Aquanex systems come with feed water adapters that can be taken apart to accommodate different sizes of plumbing connections (see photo below for an example).
  • 3/4" NPT female (combined assembly with gray, white and black adapter assembly shown below).
  • 1/4" NPT male (black adapter only shown below)

  • No. Barnstead water systems require a connection that can withstand the build-up of back pressure on the water line.
  • Plumbing connections that are threaded or compression type are required.
  • Some water purification systems require a pressurized source while others can accept a gravity feed. Water pressure outside of the system specifications whether it is too low or too high can interfere with the mechanisms of the water system.
  • To verify the water pressure is within the specification, check with your facilities personnel or measure the pressure with a pressure gage at the source.
  • If the pressure is too high, pressure reducing valves are available through Thermo Scientific as an accessory. Pressure gages (purchased locally) can be installed on the water line to monitor the feed water pressure. This is encouraged but not mandatory.
  • Some water systems send water to drain intermittently during operation to prevent the buildup of impurities from the feed water. Distillation systems require a drain for the excess cooling water.
  • An open drain or sink near the water system is acceptable and must allow for a downward flow away from the water system. The drain must be open to the atmosphere and the water system tubing must not be submerged in water.
  • It is recommended that a floor drain be present to protect the lab in case of a water leak, otherwise the manufacturer will not accept any liability for water damage. Should no such drain be available we recommend the installation of a customer provided leak detector external to the water system.

Electrical Requirements

A GFI outlet is encouraged for a water system but it not mandatory. The outlet should be in location to avoid getting wet.

Mounting of Water System

  • Wall or bench mounting must be completed by customer’s facilities personnel prior to arrival of the start-up technician. All surfaces must be capable of supporting the weight of the equipment including water. Product brochure/manual contains system dimensions and weight.

For most systems Drawings are available. If additional drawings are needed please contact your Thermo Fisher Scientific representative.

Contact Us

  • Because the ULS technicians are not aware of the construction of the wall or the location of the utilities, they will not be able to drill holes into the countertop or any other permanent structure, including walls.
Here are some tips:
  • External pretreatment filters (if required) should be positioned within 1.5 m of the unit.
  • Storage tanks for Smart2Pure or Pacific should be installed within 6 feet of the system. The distance is limited by the storage tank float cable that connects the two systems.
  • Distillation systems have a vent that expels steam. Do not place distillation system too close to the ceiling.
  • Storage tanks for Megapure stills or Classic stills must be lower than the still to allow gravity flow of water into the tank.
  • Allow for sufficient working room all around the system at the site of installation
  • New water systems may have different feed water connections and space requirements. Wall mounting brackets and anchor spacing will likely be different. Refer to the operation manual or drawing for more information.
  • If the NANOpure is being replaced by the GenPure xCAD Plus, GenPure Pro or MicroPure, the feed water adapter provided by these systems can be taken apart and the black 1/4" NPT fitting can be used.

Ambient Conditions and Feed Water Quality

  • The temperature in the installation area must be at least +2°C and must not exceed + 35°C
