The HIV receptor is composed of two molecules, the CD4 binding receptor and a co-receptor. The human chemokine receptor CxCR4 is one of the co-receptors used by primary isolates of HIV-1. Extracellular domains of human CxCR4 are important for HIV entry into the target cells. Mouse CxCR4 receptor is 91% identical to human CxCR4 and can function as co-receptor when co-expresed with human CD4.
