Forchlorfenuron (FCF) is a synthetic cytokinin used primarily as a plant growth regulator to enhance fruit size, particularly in table grapes, kiwi, and other fruits. It functions by promoting cell division and delaying crop maturity, which can significantly increase yield and quality. Structurally, forchlorfenuron is characterized by its phenylurea moiety, which interacts with plant hormonal pathways to exert its effects. Recent studies have explored its impact on human cancer cell lines, revealing that it paradoxically inhibits proliferation, migration, and invasion, potentially affecting pathways involving HIF-1 alpha and HER2. The compound's bioaccumulation potential and relatively low mammalian toxicity have prompted further investigation into its environmental and health implications.
