Elafin is primarily expressed in epithelial tissues, including skin and mucosal surfaces, where it plays a protective role against excessive proteolytic activity by inhibiting enzymes like neutrophil elastase and proteinase 3. PI3 is regulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines and is involved in modulating inflammatory responses and tissue repair processes. Its expression is often elevated in conditions characterized by inflammation, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), psoriasis, and other inflammatory diseases, reflecting its role in guarding against protease-induced tissue damage.
