It is a multifunctional protein with a high affinity for cations and hydroxyapatite that provides support to extracellular matrix and mediates the activities of a wide range of growth factors. In addition to this osteonectin is also known to play a vital role in tumor formation. Osteonectin is found to be present on the q arm of chromosome 5.
