Target Information
ZCP2 is a plant cysteine protease belonging to the papain like family that contributes to protein turnover, development, and stress responses. It is synthesized as an inactive preproenzyme that matures in acidic compartments such as the vacuole or apoplast after removal of its signal peptide and inhibitory propeptide. ZCP2 activity helps remodel storage proteins during seed germination and senescence, participates in programmed cell death and defense, and supports nutrient recycling under abiotic stress. Its function is controlled by pH, redox status, and inhibition by cystatins, enabling precise spatial and temporal regulation. Changes in ZCP2 expression or activity influence growth, tissue remodeling, and resilience by adjusting proteolysis and cell wall associated processes.
