Target Information
Pro-CRF, or pro-corticotropin-releasing factor, is the precursor form of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), a crucial peptide hormone involved in the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The CRF gene encodes this precursor, which undergoes proteolytic processing to produce the mature CRF hormone. CRF plays a vital role in the body's response to stress by stimulating the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary gland. ACTH subsequently promotes the secretion of cortisol from the adrenal cortex, which helps to manage stress and maintain homeostasis. Beyond its role in the stress response, CRF is also involved in various other physiological processes, including immune function, digestion, and energy balance. Dysregulation of CRF expression or signaling can lead to a range of disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and stress-related conditions, as well as metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
