Target Information
The Dengue Virus Type 2/4 NS2B protein is a non-structural protein that plays a critical role in the viral life cycle. NS2B is part of the dengue virus (DENV) protease complex, specifically functioning as a cofactor for the NS3 protease. This complex is essential for the cleavage of the viral polyprotein into individual functional proteins, which are necessary for viral replication and assembly. The non-structural protein 2B (NS2B) is an integral membrane protein and is involved in the proper folding and activation of the NS3 protease, making it a key player in the virus's ability to replicate within the host cell. Dengue virus, which includes four serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4), is transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes and causes dengue fever, a disease that can range from mild to severe, with symptoms including high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and in severe cases, hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. The NS2B protein, along with NS3, represents an important target for antiviral drug development, as inhibiting this protease activity can potentially halt viral replication. Understanding the structure and function of the NS2B protein in both DENV-2 and DENV-4 serotypes is crucial for designing effective antiviral therapies and for advancing our knowledge of dengue virus pathogenesis.
