The Human Parechovirus Type 1/3 VP3 protein is a structural component of the human parechoviruses (HPeVs), specifically serotypes 1 and 3, which are members of the Picornaviridae family. The VP3 protein is a part of the viral capsid, which encapsulates the viral RNA genome, providing protection and facilitating the virus's entry into host cells. Human parechoviruses are known to cause a range of illnesses, from mild gastrointestinal and respiratory infections to more severe conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis, and neonatal sepsis, particularly in infants and young children. The VP3 protein, along with other capsid proteins (VP1 and VP2), plays a crucial role in the virus's ability to infect host cells and elicit an immune response. Due to its essential functions in the viral life cycle and its immunogenic properties, VP3 is a significant target for diagnostic assays, vaccine development, and antiviral research. Understanding the structure and function of the VP3 protein in HPeV-1 and HPeV-3 is vital for developing effective strategies to prevent and treat infections caused by these viruses.
