The Monkeypox Virus D8L gene encodes a protein that is integral to the structural integrity and infectivity of the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus. The D8L protein, also known as the A-type inclusion (ATI) protein, is involved in the formation of A-type inclusion bodies within infected cells. These inclusion bodies are thought to play a role in protecting the virus from the host immune response and facilitating viral transmission. Monkeypox virus causes a zoonotic disease in humans that presents with symptoms similar to smallpox, including fever, rash, and lymphadenopathy, but is generally less severe. The D8L protein's role in the virus's life cycle and immune evasion makes it a significant target for research into antiviral therapies and vaccines. By studying the D8L protein, researchers aim to better understand the mechanisms of monkeypox virus pathogenesis and develop effective strategies to prevent and treat monkeypox infections, which have emerged as an increasing public health concern.
