The M protein of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a crucial structural protein involved in virus assembly and budding. This matrix protein plays a central role in coordinating the assembly of viral components at the plasma membrane, facilitating the formation of infectious virions. The M protein interacts with the viral envelope glycoproteins and the nucleocapsid, ensuring the proper encapsidation of the viral RNA and the release of mature virions from the host cell. Due to its essential function in the viral life cycle, the RSV M protein is a significant target for antiviral drug development. Inhibiting the M protein can potentially disrupt the assembly and release of RSV, thereby reducing viral replication and spread. Research on the RSV M protein aims to understand its interactions and mechanisms further, which could lead to the development of effective therapeutic interventions against RSV infections.
