Cathepsins are a family of proteases, and Cathepsins B and L (sometimes referred to as Cathepsin 1 and Cathepsin 7, respectively) are notable members of this group. These enzymes are primarily involved in the degradation of proteins within lysosomes, contributing to cellular turnover and homeostasis. Cathepsin B, encoded by the CTSB gene, is a cysteine protease that participates in various physiological processes, including protein catabolism, antigen processing, and apoptosis.
