Pro-MMP7 (pro-Matrix Metallopeptidase 7) is a gene that encodes the inactive precursor of MMP7, an enzyme belonging to the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family. MMP7, also known as matrilysin, is involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix components, which is crucial for various physiological processes such as tissue remodeling, wound healing, and embryonic development. Unlike other MMPs, MMP7 has a broad substrate specificity and can degrade a variety of extracellular matrix proteins, including casein, gelatins, fibronectin, and proteoglycans. The activation of pro-MMP7 to its active form is tightly regulated, often requiring proteolytic cleavage. Dysregulation of MMP7 activity has been implicated in pathological conditions such as cancer, where it can promote tumor invasion and metastasis, as well as in inflammatory diseases. Understanding the regulation and function of pro-MMP7 is essential for developing therapeutic strategies aimed at modulating its activity in various diseases.
