Pro-GDF3, or pro-growth differentiation factor 3, is the precursor form of GDF3, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily. GDF3 is involved in various biological processes including embryonic development, cell differentiation, and regulation of adipose tissue homeostasis. Pro-GDF3 undergoes proteolytic processing to become the mature, active form that can then bind to its receptors and initiate signaling pathways. GDF3 plays a critical role in early embryogenesis, particularly in the formation of the mesoderm and endoderm, and in maintaining the pluripotency of embryonic stem cells. Additionally, GDF3 has been implicated in metabolic regulation and in the pathogenesis of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Abnormal expression or mutations in the GDF3 gene can lead to developmental disorders and contribute to disease states. As a result, pro-GDF3 and its mature form are of significant interest in developmental biology, regenerative medicine, and metabolic disease research, offering potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
