Tetrachlorobiphenyls are a group of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) characterized by the presence of four chlorine atoms attached to biphenyl rings. These compounds are known for their environmental persistence and potential toxicological effects. Structurally, tetrachlorobiphenyls can vary based on the position of chlorine atoms, influencing their chemical properties and biological interactions. For instance, 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl can form guest-host complexes with PyCD hosts, affecting electron-transfer resistance in electrochemical processes. Metabolically, tetrachlorobiphenyls can be transformed into methyl sulphonyl derivatives, as observed in studies involving female mice. Additionally, exposure to certain tetrachlorobiphenyls can alter dopamine levels in the brain, indicating potential neurotoxic effects. These compounds are also subject to microbial degradation, with strains like Castellaniella sp. showing potential for bioremediation of PCB-contaminated environments.
