Mebendazole, originally developed as an anti-parasitic drug, has been repurposed for potential use in oncology due to its demonstrated anti-cancer properties. Structurally, mebendazole is a benzimidazole derivative, which allows it to interfere with microtubule formation, a mechanism crucial for its anti-parasitic and anti-cancer effects.
