Cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) is a toxic indole tetramic acid produced by fungi such as Aspergillus and Penicillium species. It is known for its ability to inhibit calcium-dependent ATPases, specifically targeting the sarcoendoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA), which disrupts calcium homeostasis within cells. This inhibition can lead to various toxic effects, including weight loss, muscle degeneration, convulsions, and potentially death in animals. CPA has been detected in various foods and feeds, posing a risk of acute mycotoxicoses in humans, with symptoms such as giddiness and nausea. Additionally, CPA has shown promising antiplasmoidal activities, comparable to chloroquine, and has been identified as an inhibitor of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in cell-based assays. Its neurotoxic effects have been studied in animal models, indicating potential depressive symptoms and neurocognitive impairments.
