Aminophylline is a bronchodilator composed of theophylline and ethylenediamine, primarily used to treat reversible airway obstruction due to asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It functions by relaxing and opening air passages in the lungs, thereby facilitating easier breathing. Aminophylline improves diaphragm contractility, stimulates respiratory drive, enhances mucociliary transport, and supports right heart function. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties and weak diuretic effects. Despite its therapeutic benefits, aminophylline requires careful monitoring due to its narrow therapeutic index, which can lead to significant side effects if not properly managed. The drug is administered intravenously or orally, depending on the severity of the condition being treated.
