Galectin-14 is a member of the galectin family of proteins, which are characterized by their affinity for beta-galactoside sugars and involvement in various biological processes including cell-cell adhesion, immune response modulation, and apoptosis. The gene encoding Galectin-14, LGALS14, is located on chromosome 19q13.2. Galectin-14 is predominantly expressed in eosinophils and has been identified to play a role in allergic response and inflammation. It is known to participate in the modulation of immune responses, particularly asthma and other allergic conditions, by interacting with glycoproteins on cell surfaces. The expression of Galectin-14 is elevated during allergic reactions and this molecule is considered a potential biomarker for eosinophilic activity in such conditions. There is ongoing research into the exact mechanisms of Galectin-14 in immune response modulation, which might provide insights into novel therapeutic approaches for managing allergic diseases.
